The Wanting and the Getting and the Doing

My Gigi always says that the fun is the wanting, but that's not true now is it. That's just. not. true. Remember last week when I wanted a hamburger smothered in mushrooms, onions and cheese? I wanted it so bad I could almost taste it. (But not quite.)

There was nothing fun about wanting that hamburger.

For those of you wondering if I ever got that hamburger, YES I did, but I didn't enjoy it because I paid $5 and ate it behind my hub's back.

(It's not as enjoyable to defy my hub behind his back. You get me?)

Point is, the fun isn't always in the getting either

For instance, there was nothing fun about getting head lice after my twins were born. And there was nothing fun about getting three speeding tickets last year. And there was nothing fun about getting a bag of my MIL's hand-me-down . . . well . . . let's just say nighties, last weekend. Or as she calls them, quote fun wear unquote. (Ewwwww, does anyone have a bar of soap so I can wash my mind out with soap?)

Actually I take that back, it was a little bit fun getting that bag of hand-me-down "fun wear" from my MIL. I haven't simultaneously deep-belly-laughed and grossed out that hard in months.

When I grow up I'm going to tell my grand kids that the fun isn't in the wanting. Or even in the getting. The fun is in the doing.

You WANT something so you DO somthing to GET it. It's the doing that makes the wanting AND the getting fun.

Am I right? Or am I right?

Remember when I did Dummy Boot Camp last month? And I went to the temple four times? And I accomplished 20 tasks I'd been putting off for months? And I read seven great books? And I became acquainted with some of the deepest spiritual truths known to man? Truths like repent and forgive, love one another, and CLEAN YOUR FRIDGE already?

That was fun.

But this month has been even more fun because this month I'm studying the art of storytelling by challenging myself to watch 20 interesting movies, or as the hip people would say, films, by May 31. So far I've watched nine films. I have found that to study the art of storytelling is to study emotional truth.

Now you all know how I love movie wisdom, right? So please indulge me as I put on my yoda hat and share the emotional truths I have learned thus far in the films I've watched:

Waiting for Superman, a documentary about the education system in America. LOVED IT! I learned that the education system in America is broken, and all because, as my daughter frequently points out, adults are just teenagers who look old.

Black Swan. This movie creeped me out. Even a dummy can only take so much emotional truth. Wisdom gleaned? Return this movie to the Redbox after the bloody bathtub scene. (shudder, shudder)

The King's Speech, a film about the struggle to let your voice be heard. I really enjoyed it, even though I fell asleep halfway through. Lesson learned? It's always a struggle to step up and be the king you were meant to be.

Moulin Rouge, because can you ever get enough of Ewan McGregor singing love medleys to Nicole Kidman? Wisdom? The greatest thing you'll ever learn, is just to love, and be loved in returned. Especially if Ewan McGregor is the one loving in return. (Just sayin')

The 19th Wife, a murder mystery in a polygamist community. Lesson learned? Braids just ain't that attractive on adult women. Oh, and polygamy bites!

Water for Elephants, a circus movie about Rob Pattinson and a heroic elephant--plus a little non-sparkley, non-fanged-toothed love story to boot. GREAT MOVIE! One of the lines sums up life in a nutshell: Everyone plays their part, and everything is an illusion.

Push, an artsy movie about bad acting. (And superpowers.) What I learned? Hmmmm . . . sometimes screaming can be funny?

Country Strong, one of my FAVORITES! A movie that illustrates the complexities of love and loss, and shows how the the good and the bad, the happy and the sad, the beautiful and the ugly, always happen simultaneously.

Gwyneth Paltrow ROCKED! SO! HARD!

LOVED, LOVED, LOVED this movie. Favorite line: She's not crazy, she's the only honest one among us. And the wisdom? Miracles do happen. For instance one day you may run out and buy a movie soundtrack even though you strongly h . . . h . . . h . . . ate country music.

And my personal favorite? A movie so good I wouldn't recommend it. At all. So good I'm going to have to tell you about it tomorrow because I'm out of space for today.

Don't move a muscle! I'll be back in the morning.

P.S. I need suggestions for more interesting movies to watch!

I'm embarrassed to admit that the only one of those I've ever seen is Push... the lesson I learned? An entire movie budget can be spent on breaking glass... and then more breaking glass... I think I only watched it because it was that or break out the "fun wear"...

oh, and I had to laugh that we both posted about our h... h... hate of Country Music... that's what's been keeping me away from that movie... I guess it's time to stop avoiding it :)

My Hub and I just saw Thor, it was good. I don't even recall a swear word! Also loved LOVED Red. It is out on dvd now so you wouldn't have to pay the extortion prices at the theater like we did to go and see Thor. Just sayin!! Also love Downton Abby. It is a PBS/BBC mini series. But I love period dramas. Not just when I am on MY period either!!!!

The Crash Test Dummy said...

LAUGHED OUT LOUD at Springrose's period drama comment. Ha ha ha And Tonya's "fun wear" alternative.

Did your hubs vomit at the thought of his wife wearing his mother's "fun wear" to have fun with him?!

Loved the lesson you learned in the "doing"! It's true!

OH! And I'm so sorry I missed wishing you the very best birthday on FB! Hope you ate yourself silly and was spoiled rotten!

This post really makes me regret all the time I have spent away from blogdania and my darling, funny, upbeat friends. sigh . .anyway, I have really been into Victorian costume dramas based on novels. I just watched the 2000 version of Anna Karenina which is said to be the best novel ever written (I guess I really ought to read it) so it's kind of a must. Other versions might be better but I wouldn't know. Finally--Netflix instant free streaming rocks!

I was going to tell you that I haven't seen any of those movies, but I just can't seem to get past the "fun wear"
It just raises so many questions.
Why did she give them to you? Does she want new ones? Does she think you guys need to have more fun?
This will have me perplexed all day......

Country Strong? Really? My mom said it was one of the lousiest movies ever so I haven't bothered. I hate country music too, the first and only time a movie inspired me to buy a country CD was Walk the Line.

Movie I recommend... Prom.

;-)

(can it be an old movie?)

Xanadu.
Lesson to be learned: You CAN skate your way through life.

The Crash Test Dummy said...

UGH!!!

ARGH!

I just wrote a novel size comment and blogger wouldn't post it.

Dontcha hate it when that happens?

I'm going to post this just to make sure I don't get burned twice.

Maybe it was for the best that I lost it since I told a nudity story from back in the day when I was dating my hub. Let's just say my MIL is comfortable with nudity in locker room jacuzzis. I respect her for that.

Did I tell you about the ticket I got on my way to women's Conference? So unfair. Why do some people take speed limits so literally? Aren't they more of suggestions? And the part that was really no fair was the fact that I was going 87 and it was just 10 miles after the speed limit changed back to 75 from 80. I mean seriously is it really my fault that I am not more observant. I was way bummed because it was just before Nephi, so I was almost there, and it was going downhill and I don't have cruise control, so really. And then to make matters worse, I didn't read the fact that I was suppose to pay the dang thing within 14 days, so now I have to pay the $50 penalty. Talk about rude. Sheesh. So I get your traffic ticket woes. It what I am saying in a very long winded kind of way.

The Crash Test Dummy said...

Aly,thanks for the birthday wishes, and in answer to your question, YES, he got very squeeeeeemish! lol

Val! HA HA, you are a silly goose. I loved Xanadu so much when I was 14 and I walked down town at least a dozen times to watch it. I really did believe you could skate your way through life. But then I just watched it a year ago again (with my daughter) and thought it just might be the dumbest movie evah! Next to Cry Baby.

The Crash Test Dummy said...

Ha ha ha PAT, I so feeeeeeel you. And get you! Fer reals! SOOO SICK of the cops creeping all over the place and taking the speed limit literally. It really should be more like a guideline. Like all the church policies. ;)

The Crash Test Dummy said...

Miss Heidi, I'm going to sign up for Netflix this month so I can get ANY movie at want, on DEMAND! Hope I can figure out the streaming thingie.

Okay, JILLYBEAN, all of your perplexions cracked me up. THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU for noticing what a very odd predicament the passing of the proverbial torch was for me. She said she didn't need them anymore since she's 79. I don't know why I got the hand off. Maybe because she thinks I'm sexy like that. Or should be sexy like that.

EWWWWW! Soap please.

Low, ME TOO! I LOVED WALK THE LINE SO MUCH!

I'm thinking your mom hated Country Strong because it was really sad and complex and it blurred the lines between good and bad, right and wrong. I love movies like that.

If they have a good soundtrack. ;)

I can't believe you hate country music and you live in Georgia. Such a non-conformist.

Sandi said...

Something so funny about the way you said the fun is in the DOING, after just discussing the fun wear- - is it just me? ha ha I don't think my kids want to hear those words from me :)
Glad you got your hamburger.
Ugh what did I miss in Country Strong? I HATED IT! I just could not find one redeeming quality in anybody in that movie- I guess I need to have someone to like in my movies.
Have you seen Get Low with Robert Duvall? that is not my kind of a movie at all but I kind of loved it. Keep posting your "films" so I can add them to my netflix too!

The Crash Test Dummy said...

HAHAHAHA Sandi, I did NOT even think of that. Oops, Freudian slip. Or not. That fun is NOT in the doing. ha ha

I kid.

Sandi, you didn't even think the main character was a hottie? ha ha At least you couldn't given the hottie a nod.

Okay, we're even then, because I HATED HATED HATED that stinkin' ABBA movie MAMA MIA! I hated it even more than country music. ha ha

Are you in Hawaii? Did you see Soul Surfer? I just saw it today! aaaahhh! Somebody, take me back!

Hey, my verifier says flatdiva. How well it knows me!

The Crash Test Dummy said...

Sandi, who are you rooting for now? American Idol?

I say Lauren is going to win.

So sad James is gone.

Sandi said...

Ha Ha so Mama Mia was lame, I can admit it now, but seriously all ya gotta do is throw Colin Firth in a movie and I am all over it. Yes Tim McGraw is a hottie too, but something about that movie just annoyed the heck out of me, maybe it was a bad time of the month when I saw it ha ha. I am sitting here watching the diary of a wimpy kid for the 3rd time and I guess that is right on my level because I think it is soooo dang funny. I did see Soul Surfer and I heard there were tons of BYUH kids in it- I know it was all cheesy acting and stuff but I liked it anyway, go figure.
I am still shocked they sent James home on Idol...what the what?? I have not a clue who might win, I just hope it's not Haley because she just bugs the crap out of me.
Headed to Hawaii on June 21st....soooo excited!

Can you tolerate foreign films? Especially if they speak English? Because the movie Once came out a few years ago and that's some great storytelling. Amelie is in French subtitles and it's outstanding storytelling. A few years ago a movie called The Visitor came out. Really good. Love, love, love Stranger Than Fiction. One of the few movies I can rewatch. And 500 Days of Summer was pretty cool.

I'll come back if I think of anything else.

The Crash Test Dummy said...

O. M. GOSH Sandi, Haley bugs the crap out of me too. Finally we agree on something. Is it because she's head over heels in love with herself? She's always flirting with herself on the monitor. ha ha

I did see someone I knew from a choir tour in Soul Surfer and it made me so excited. That was hard to watch. Painful. But I LOVED IT! Carrie Underwood was the cheesiest. hee hee

I haven't seen Diary of a Wimpy Kid but I hear it's funny.

Melanie I love foreign films! I'm writing all of your suggestions down and I'm so excited. Totally trust your taste. I actually own Amelie. Woohoo! Loved it. Maybe I'll re watch it. I have a dream of attending a film festival one day and just watching movies all day long.

Sandi said...

yay we agree! woooohoooo! FYI we also agree on our friend JJ you know - and chocolate haupia pie - AND that Carrie Underwood was the cheesiest :)
I am totally writing down all these movie suggestions--although I gotta give Melanie's Stranger than fiction choice a big fat thumbs down- Sorry Miss Melanie!
And yes I do believe you nailed it on the head about Haley- self esteem is good and all, but flirting with yourself? that is just taking it too far..Call the winner now----come on tell me who you think will take it all

Sandi said...

and p.s. I miss Simon. ALOT.

The Crash Test Dummy said...

I'm calling it for Lauren. Scotty and Lauren in the finals. Haley's out this week. Fingers crossed.

Sandi said...

alrighty then I'm going with Scotty because I just cannot stand to be TOO agreeable. May the best redneck win!

The Crash Test Dummy said...

My hub too. He says it every week. I agree at this stage of the show. I love Steven Tyler, but I miss all the rudeness. ha ha I know

Simon would have noticed Haley checking herself out on the monitors and said something to humiliate her. lol

The Crash Test Dummy said...

Ha ha Yes, may the best redneck win.

Oh, and btw, the hottie I was referring to in Country Strong wasn't Tim McGraw. It was the young dude. Come on, Sandi, you had to notice!!!

The Mom said...

Watch The Visitor. It's on Netflix. Awesome.
Then read The Forgotten Garden. I liked it.

And I'm not even going to comment about the fun wear because it just hurts my head.

Susan said...

Thanks for all the movie recommendations! I'm going to see Water for Elephants now. I hope I don't blush too bad during the sex scenes.

Movies to watch--we just watched Ramona and Beezus and loved it. And don't worry, I'm super picky about movies because I always watch for the story and truth aspects too. And this movies was great all the way around, just like the books. If I can think of anymore, I'll let you know. But you best get back on here and tell us about that last movie. You sneak cliffhangerer!

The Crash Test Dummy said...

Susan, I LOVED Ramona and Beezus. Great story telling!

I don't remember any blushing parts in Water for Elephants. Maybe one small part, but it doesn't last long.

The Mom, I've heard The Visitor is good, so I'm putting that on my list.

Annette Lyon said...

Suddenly so SO grateful that my MIL isn't the type to be comfortable in a locker room jacuzzi. (Just sayin' . . .)

Speaking of foreign films, I loved, loved Jean de Florette and the sequel, Manon of the Spring.

Holy cowzers, they're good. You forget you're reading subtitles.

The Crash Test Dummy said...

Annette, O.M.Gosh, YES, it was awkward. Especially during the dating years. I'm excited to put your foreign films on my list! YAY! Totally trust your judgement. BTW, CONGRATULATIONS! Heard your Band of Sisters got a Whitney award! WOOHOOOO!

Leslie said...

Debbie, as always your blog ROCKS and love the goal you set for yourself!!!...I also completely agree about having something that you hubby is against and doing it anyway...no fun!

The Songer said...

<3 this post! I laughed so hard! I cant hear enough about the MIL, I bet you could dedicate a whole blog to all her nonsense and we'd laugh (with her) everyday! LOL!

<3 the Movies wisdom.....Totally agree about braids ...... havent seen any of the one's you recommended.. and very excited for summer to come, so i can lay around all day long and watch movies....

Adam Lambert who was arguably the best American Idol ever tweets. "Haley gets criticized cuz she's the best and SO not cookie cutter. She was Fiesty 2n b/c she's a strong, smart woman. My fav kind o woman. The other three are doing great and are working but hard but hae grown so predictable to me. Not bringing much freshness to the table. Bottom line-in my opinion, Haley would make the edgiest, most original album out of the three."

The Crash Test Dummy said...

Adam ROCKS, and Haley's voice ROCKS! But I just can't stand how she watches herself in the monitor and then smiles at herself and bats her eyelashes. I don't mind if she does that in the bathroom at home, but whenever she looks at herself on T.V. I see her brain saying "WOW! I am so dang hot!"

Stephen said...

When she growls with that sexy voice she moves me. haha! Out of the top ten contestants she probably has the least appealing personality but if we are judging personalities then I vote for Casey.

Haley's song choices tonight preview:
1. What Should Never Be by Led Zepplin
2. Rhiannon by Fleetwood Mac
3. You Oughta Know by Alanis Morissette

The Crash Test Dummy said...

She does have the most original voice left. How did you find out her song choices? She's going to KILL those songs! But yes, least appealing personality, darnit!

Stephen said...

On the movie question I say becareful of foriegn movies. We have happy endings engrained in us here in American. A large percentage of the foriegn films I have watched often end in tragedy. They may be more realistic to the real world but I like movies to help me happily escape from the worlds realities.

The Crash Test Dummy said...

That is interesting. I'm actually writing a post dealing with that right now.

The Crash Test Dummy said...

BTW, ALOHA IWA and LESLIE. I am so happy to see you guys here again!
