It's about stinkin' time!

When I was twelve I began begging my mom incessantly for permission to get my ears pierced.

She refused, because she was mean like that.

Her rule was fourteen so I had to wait, and what a miserable wait it was. For both of us.

"I will never use such cruel and unusual punishment on my daughter!" I screamed at her on a daily basis.

And I meant it. I was willing AND ready to be a cool mom to my daughter.

But my daughter showed no interest in me being cool. Or in getting her ears pierced. Not even when I dropped hints or suggestions or got down on my hands and knees and begged.

"I don't feel like it right now," she would say.

"Well, hows about a tattoo?" I would say. "A shaka tattoo! Or a plumeria! Or a cute little dophin!"

She wasn't interested in getting a tattoo either.

Which is why yesterday was such a special day.

Yesterday morning my daughter said, "Mom, will you take me to get my ears pierced after school?"

"Will I! Will I! Will I!" I cried.

No, literally, I cried.

But she didn't. She didn't even wince. She just sat there in her daddy's college t-shirt and grinned.

I tried to convince her to get vampire fangs or daggers or skull and bones, but she just went with little diamond studs.

YAWN!!!

Something else made yesterday special! The Magic Quilt arrived from Kritta--WOOOHOOO!--which produced massive chicken skin and major crocodile tears from me!

Photographic evidence coming tomorrow (after I finish sprinkling it with pixie dust and serenading it with Mozart).

It is so random that I have been first as much as I have lately. Strange.

Hey did you see me stalking/scaring/terrifying sis thompson at my place? Look to it.

I can't beleive you got her ears pierced at Wal Mart. I suppose that was the next best thing to a tattoo parlour, but a little bit scary to me since Wal Mart seems to have a question on employment forms asking if applicant is missing a few marbles if you know what I mean. I don't know if i could trust my ear lobes to people who seem dumber than dirt. (sorry to anyone reading this who works at Wal Mart and is smarter than dirt)

Congratulations T, my ten year old got her done but then let them grow closed because it was too painful for her.

I'm sure I will lose a few followers over that oversight, Pat. ha ha ha

Dang! The only place that does them around here has a down and dirty rule about photographs in the store... honestly made me put the camera away before they began piercing... so I missed out on all the good pictures.

Of course, I had to wait until 12 so my daughter got 'em at 8... pretty sure in a few generations we'll be piercing in utero.

I got my ears pierced (the first time) on my 23rd birthday. I left those stud things in for about 30 hours, then I was done with it.

The SECOND time, I went to Windward Mall with my MIA Maids (Laie 1st ward) for their annual Christmas shopping expedition (I was now 36 years old), and they talked me into trying it again. I DID. I succumbed to peer pressure. FROM MIA MAIDS.

Anyway, this time I stuck with the program, and still have my mutilation intact.

For my girls, I required that they brush their teeth, night and morning, for 14 consectutive days before they were allowed to get their ears pierced. If they missed even once, they had to start over. I figured if they needed to clean their earlobes for 14 days, they'd better get in the habit. So, that's how the older three did it. Darcie has no interest in getting hers done. YET.

When #3 turned 18, she exercised her adult perogative by getting a pierce in the top of her ear. I know, she's out of standards, but the beauty of it was all her friends were like "What did your Mom say!?" and I didn't say A WORD. Kinda took the joy out of the little rebellion. heh heh heh.

We moms do what we can.

Seriously? Walmart does piercings? I know about the tats, but ears? JK

I remember getting my ears pierced...I was eight and it was a HUGE deal for me. Now, I wear nothing but little silver hoops. I don't think I've taken them out in over two years.

I love her freckles, and her diamond studs! And her BYU tee shirt.

I was something like 5 or 6 and convinced my mom that EveryOne Had Them But Me! So I got them. I don't think I even lasted a whole year with wearing them. And still don't wear them to this day. I do remember it hurt.

I think it's like childbirth that way...

AnyWHO: I emailed you from my top secret BloggingMamaAndrea gmail account. I've got some questions about that Sunny Place you used to live. Me and Hubs are going, SOLO. As in NO KIDS. As in I don't have to pack a single dang baby wipe!

(I will anyway and hand sanitizer, cause that's just me.)

I love the Wal-Mart photos!

My mom told the grandkids no ear piercing until 16 in our family...but no one listened and they all got them earlier!!

My poor daughter got a horrible infection - her ear swelled up huge and she had to go on antibiotics. She let them close and that was that!

Yay for Crash-lette! I love wearing earrings! It is one of the things that makes me feel all girly.

Are you serious, Garden? Is Walmart really all uptight like that? I can't believe I didn't have cops come rushing towards me and put me in a headlock, being that I seem to be a cop magnet and all. Phew! And then to post the photos for all the world to see. Am I ignorant or what?

I'm just going to sit here and wait for the lightning to strike me.

Queen, for the record, I would never let my daughter get a tattoo at Walmart. And if I did, I would definitely snap photos for you all to see. ;)

Kazzy, me too! Me too!

Val, val, val, are we going to IKEA soon or what, girlfriend? I need me another Apron. I'm starting to get the cooking bug again.

Iwa, that's probably the best way to go. Kinda like circumcision. Just get it over with when they're clueless. Did they cry? That's what I want to know. Did they tug on their ears a lot? Did you wonder if they had an earache?

Ah, Andrea, how exciting!!!!!!!!! I wish I was still there to meet and greet you and take you around and get you into PCC for half price. I'll answer your top secret email ASAP.

Barb, I did that once. My sis sent me a pair of little gold hoops with her son's birthstone dangling from them just after he died. I wore them for years without changing. Now I like big silver hoops. You'll get there too, Barb, when you're an old lady like me.

Old Boat Guy, for some reason that ttypou joke really cracked me up. Do you stutter?

The Mom, that is the best idea ever! The brushing hair and teeth thing. I wish my boys wanted to get their ears pierced because they could use some of that motivation. hee hee Can't believe the mia maids peer pressured you. HA!

I don't have an interesting ear piercing story dang it. I'm glad the walmart cops didn't take you down- although that would have made for an extremely funny post. I'm SOO excited to see the magic quilt!!

I don't have any interesting ear piercing stories either, but my son, my oldest son, went to prom on Saturday. Growing up so fast.

My dad had a "no piercing ears" rule. Period. When I was 15 I FINALLY talked him into a rule that we could when we turned 16. After years my older sister begging and me, he caved. Then I turned 16 and decided I didn't want my ears pierced.

THEN when I was 26 I finally did it. Then it was a lot of work, what with changing them and all. And it was painful. Why do people say it's not?

So I let the holes close up.

Then about 8 years ago I repierced them. (myself... just forced some starters though) And then about a week later I was over it again.

That is my ear piercing story and I'm sticking with it! :-D

Sandi said...

OK. How come the men get to look so young? This is directed at Braden who just shocked me by saying that he has a kid old enough to go to prom because I have looked at his blog and seen his pic and .......NOOOOO WAY!

The Crash Test Dummy said...

Ha ha Sandi, just because your hub looks like he's twelve! I'm sure that brings it's own set of issues. hee hee Kinda like when a girl marries a guy shorter than herself and she can never wear her heels without feeling self-conscious. You can never wear your wrinkles again comfortably. ;) Not that I would know if you have any, being as I've never met you.

But seriously Braden, Prom? Next year my daughter could be going to Prom with him. And she would have cute little diamond studs in her ear lobes. And then they could get married and we would be in-laws. And then she could start a humor blog about you and your wife and all your quirks. hee hee hee

Oh Low, I am crying right now just to see you again. I have missed you, my friend. And what a funny schizophrenic ear piercing story. I would stick to it too if I were you.

love it!!!! LOVE IT!!!!

i think i was the only senior hottie ( yes i said hottie ) that did not have my ears pierced. oh well...

she must be a true hottie athlete tom-boy!!??!! :)

Sandi said...

Lets not bring up my wrinkles or my 12 year old hubby. I'm a little sensitive.

The Crash Test Dummy said...

hee hee hee Sandi, my mom went through the exact same thing. People always asked her if my dad was her son. AS IF! The worst part was that he WAS kinda like a troubled teen.

High five, Katie! ;)

Yea for T!!! I'll have to find some cute Hawaiian earring for her. She has to have plumeria ones for sure, or turtle ones or a coconut tree something.

I love earrings, and over Christmas in Utah I bought like 10 pairs. I love them, but I always lose them. They have to be cheap because I don't want to be too sad when I eventually do lose them.

My dad's rule was also 14. So my rule was 8 like T. You know Nan just got hers. She still wears them every day and is diggin on them.

Martha said...

Oh forgot to say today was May Day. Jim and Nan were awesome and they were in the main event as bamboo stick dancers. I'll have to post pics and videos on my blog for you guys.

Yesterday I scraped carpet glue residue off the floor of our new house for like 2 hours straight. So fun. Today Perry is scraping off the popcorn/asbestos ceiling. We are making progress.

Josh leaves for states today. He plays the #5 seed. Go Joshy.

The Crash Test Dummy said...

YAY for Joshy! And YAY for May Day. I can't wait to see the photos. I'm in the process of doing a post about last year's May Day because I never got to it last year.

Boo for scraping glue residue and asbestos. ;)

And I said the same thing about my children.

I almost took my baby to get her ears pierced...

I pierce my girls ears at 3 months... I'm one of those moms.

"Come say hello and wish you all safe" That's what your chinese reader said to you. I wonder if they've ever invented articles. They invented gun powder and giant dragon heads for parades, so you'd think they'd get right on that whole 'the, a, an' train. sheesh. 5,000 years of civilization and they still haven't discovered the magic of a well-placed article.

And I had my 3 year old's ears pierced, and she never would let me clean them (because 3 year olds are the boss, right?) and they got so infected they grew giant mutant bloody gob balls of unmentionable terrors behind her earlobes. So we had to have her ears surgically removed. That's right; in place of ears she now has two Princess Leia sticky bun hair appliances fused to the side of her head.

You should probably warn your daughter.

The Crash Test Dummy said...

Ha ha ha DeNae. I so appreciate you stopping by to translate for me. How caring and thoughtful my Chinese read is. Do I have just one Chinese reader or multiples of Chinese readers?

We don't do articles or prepositions in Hawaii either. It's easier that way. And cooler.

After all these stories I'm so glad my daughter is old enough to take care of her own earlobes.

What's up with that?
I don't even have my ears pierced.
