I figured out why Utah is so depressed

Girls Camp!!!!

My daughter just attended girls camp in Utah with her cousin.  Just hearing about it depressed me.

"Mom, It was soooo much FUN!" my daughter said. "The leaders were soooooo nice! They were soooooo coooooool! They danced on the rooftops with us. They cooked the most YUM-O food. They had an all-you-can-eat Cafe Rio bar for the whole stake. And one leader got up at 2 a.m. to make our lunches for the hike.  It was AWESOME!"

I would be depressed if I were that nice too.

P.S.  Utah may have a higher prescription drug use rate than Hawaii, but I bet we can kick their booty when it comes to Kava use.

P.S.S.  You didn't hear it from me, but I heard Tennessee has a high depression rate too and Rhode Island uses the most illicit drugs.

At least Utah isn't illicit about it.

But I'm not judging R.I.  (Have you seen all the Dunkin' Donuts in that state?)

This talk of Utah is worrying me. Stop it. :-) The Olive Garden in NYC is the best. Imagine, being exhausted from two full days of traveling, and being completely taken in by the big neon "spectaculars" and "jumbotrons", and the energy, even though it was still early and cold--getting to enjoy it all in a quiet, relaxing spot, feeling like it was all there for just us and good friends. That was a great party!

Hi Colleen! AMEN about the Olive Garden in NYC. It was perfect. Mariko would have done the same thing if she was with us.

Hey, I saw Austin at Hukilau and thought of you. Adam too. Hope you're having fun!

Ack! Girls camp. I have mine in a week and I wouldn't dream of waking up at 2:00 to help the girls. Heck no, they can make their own lunch.
I knew I should have just shipped them all to Utah. I wouldn't have had to plan anything!

I hear the air in Spain is full of cocaine. No need to buy it. Illicitly or not. (Is illicitly a word? Maybe I just spelled it wrong. You should have a spell check on your comment box. Get right on that, kay?)

Ha! Heidi's comment is so funny and random, I'm thinking she's been sniffing that Spanish air. Perhaps it's the continuation of another conversation? The perils of blog-to-blog convos, I guess!

And you're right about Utah, and it's not just the Mo's, either. We took our youth symphony & chorus up to SLC a couple of years ago, and no matter where we were, our kids were a-MAZED at how friendly and helpful everyone was. Poor little Vegas refugees, lapping up even the slightest kindness from whatever stranger was willing to not smack them upside the head.

But I didn't start in on the prescription meds until I moved to Seattle. There is something about 9 months of rain that tends to wear on your psyche just a teensy, tinsy bit.

WV: sconepa. That Utah ancestor who knows the secret recipe for deep fried bread products.

As a leader who is currently up to her ears in camp preperations (is that spelled right?) I can tell you it is a little depressing being so nice.

I don't live in Utah, so I'm probably not as sad as I could be. Whew! I'm probably not as nice as I could be either. Darn.

I wonder if I could get a jar of that Spanish air to take to camp with me....

For a second I was gonna be all, "Utah is cool! I'm not depressed!" But then you said 'Girls Camp.' Yuck. Just plain yuck. Now I AM depressed. Granted I grew up in a neighborhood where there were no girls my age---so when I went to camp it was with girls either older and younger and I promise they were ALL cheer-leaders.

Where's my chocolate?

Never been to girls camp....true story!

My idea of camping is a Marriott. I can feel the clean sheets and smell the room service now!

I tried camping when our boys were younger and we took our dog. I felt so bad for our dog who was being attacked by mosquitos. So, I sprayed the dog with mosquito repellant. She had a epileptic attack. NICE. The toilet situation was nothing to write home about either. SCARY!!!! After day 2, I cried "uncle" and we went home. The boys didn't see what the big deal was. They had a befriended a local ponderosa to relieve themselves behind. I'm a wuss!

April, no way and SHUT UP even, how have you never been to girls camp. I have to say that I am totally addicted to girls camp, probly because I am so nice. And modest, also. But alas this year is the first year in four years that I am not going. And I was gipped out of two days of camp last year. I am already having withdrawals and they are not even going until August. I may need therapy to get over not going. What does that say if you are depressed you can't go? Might blow a hole in your whole theory. He hee. Well I am glad you daughter got to have so much fun with her cousin. I am loving watch my kids have fun with their cousins.

Ha! Yeah April, SHUT UP! You've never been to girls camp? I bet you'll be there next year, hee hee hee :)

I always had a great time at girl's camp - even the year I was asked to sleep in a tent one night with a girl who was in a fight with one of the other girls, cuz I'm a peace maker like that, and we stayed up super late talking and she told me all about how she was sleeping with one of the boys in the ward and about all the other boys she'd slept with. Was that TMI? You'll be relieved to know though that I didn't have anything of the like to confess. Anyway, girls camp was always a real hoot and I rarely slept the entire week. There were too much pranking to be done after hours ;-)

I'm pretty sure there wouldn't be such a high anti-depressant rate in Utah if more people were self medicating with alcohol...

Oh, you're totally invited over if you're ever in Nevada, even though you know my housekeeping secret :D Just act all impressed.

Did I mention I am IN YW now? Had to work...oh well. And I NEEEEEED my sleep. It's not pretty if I don't get it. Really, I am not a camping person.....maybe I might have to try it, but it really does NOT sound appealing in ANY way.

Miss Heidi that was your best comment ever! ha ha ha ha ha I loved it. And it wasn't random at all. It was you gossiping and making assumptions and drawing conclusions and spreading unfounded rumors.

I bet my life it's totally true though. I've been to Spain and I believe it!

The Crash Test Dummy said...

SCONEPA DeNae! LOL. What a kick. So in the spirit of things.

Ha ha Wesleys mom about bottling the spanish air.

We Mormons should get extra credit for taking life head on, without any anelgesics (did I spell that wrong?) And pretending that we like it that way. hee hee

Ah Barb, so sorry for depressing you. So sorry for depressing all of you. I appreciate you helping me work through my own depression at the risk of your mental health.

I am really laughing tonight at all of your comment. I love that Pat and Nevada told April to SHUT UP!

But seriously, April SHUT UP! YOU have NEVER been to Girls camp? And you're in YW? Oh, girl. How much does that guilt weigh?

The Crash Test Dummy said...

How hilarious that Pat is addicted to girls camp. I love it. Pat, you really are the nicest person I know. Seriously.

I CAN'T WAIT TO MEET YOU GUYS!

I am going to cry though that Sandi won't be there. Mark my words Sandi, I will drive to Arizona one day and take you to Olive Garden. Or In and Out Burgers.

IF KK doesn't bring you Tim Tams I will totally send them.

The Crash Test Dummy said...

And Nevada, it' so good to see you in here again. I will totally take you up on that offer too. I'll stop in Nevada on my way to Sandi's.

And wow about the TMI. AWKWARD!

I loved girls camp, btw.

Happy 4th of July everyone!

Hah... I totally believe you that neurotic over achieving Girls camp leaders = depression!

I went to girls camp almost half my life (even the year you were so kind enough to make me go to RS) and this year when everyone was busy prepping for it, I was literally thanking the lord for not having to go this year! and not even a hint of depression, bankruptcy, online porn, percrsiption drug use, or suicide!

So i didnt try the TTSS ....i wasnt brave enough and i didnt want to risk wasting my spam on something I might not enjoy! maybe another day!

My best girls camp as a leader happened in Utah.... I locked all the girls in thier tents with those $.25 diary locks from the dollar store so that no one could have fun after hours! It was so funny!

The next night they stole my bras and hung them up the flag pole! and when our ward did devotional the next morning and put up the flag, all my bras came down flapping in wind as we all sang! Inside i really couldnt stop giggling because i thought it was so funny! but on the outside I made sure that you knew they better watch out! It was great!

IWA (e - va) said...

My favorite girls camp as a youth was in my 3rd year! Sis Au was our Camp Director.. could you imagine? We played so many dirty tricks on her it was so fun!

IWA (e - va) said...

April come camp in Hawaii... It's wonderful.. we bring our couches, our beds, x-boxes, before when our ward camped two weeks people would bring their refrigerator, and last year in 6th ward someone brought a kitchen sink (no kidding!)

and the best part we go home to shower! and there are flushing toilets!

hahahahah! wv: fuspalin... haha do i even need to spell it out! hahahaha.... i cant believe it.. i think my wv is a democrat from alaska!

IWA (e - va) said...

Glad T was able to get to camp this year! I really loved it as a youth, too bad my mom was YW pres my whole time in YW!

The Crash Test Dummy said...

Ha ha Iwa!!! I am laughing at you not being brave enough to try the SPAM slam and locking your girls in their cabins and your bras up the flag pole and you teasing Sis Au ha ha ha ha ha ha (Did you ever play pranks on Sis Ernestburg? My son just got back from Scout camp and he wishes he could play pranks on her).

I'm also laughing that your mom was the YW president all your life. ha ha

And I am going to quote you on your ward camp stories.

How funny that my verifier is a democrat from Alaska! ha ha

Happy 4th of July everyone!

Thanks, I took a little bloggy break, but my 14 year old followed all your Jonas Brothers news and almost died of JoBro envy :D I need to catch up...

WOW...i have carried so much other guilt it never donned on me I needed to carry this guilt too. Thanks for reminding me Crash! That's what friends are for. :)

Although it does sound fun camping in Hawaii. You see IWA, I do tend to carry my kitchen sink around with me in my purse! Hmmmm.....it is tempting...

Crash, I think people have THOUGHT to play tricks on "Aunty Emma" but never have enough nerve to do so.

And I happened to love girls camps... well... until they were moved to the hot humid Cricket Field. I was the girl that told ALL the spooky stories that made everyone else scared to close their eyes... I tell mean Night Marcher tales and when you have had a girls camp at Pupukea or Kualoa Beach Park... it makes that much more of an impact. Scary stories in the cricket field just didn't go over well.... oh... unless you count the grave yard tales. LOL.

I know that's what kept me sane. That and I was the official fire starter for camp. No one could start a fire like I could :D Pyro's know what they're doing that's why.
